Matika Mitchell is the Founder and Managing Director of Malya Consultants, an Aboriginal-led advisory consultancy based on Larrakia Country in Darwin, Northern Territory.
Matika brings more than 15 years of experience across government, Aboriginal organisations, community services, infrastructure, reform and applied consultancy. Her work spans research, engagement, design, governance and evaluation, with a strong focus on turning policy intent, community priorities and evidence into practical programs, frameworks, tools and systems that can be implemented and strengthened over time.
Drawing strength from generations of strong women and deep connections across Central Australia, West Arnhem and North Queensland, Matika’s work is grounded in cultural integrity, community-led change and practical accountability. She works with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, government agencies, peak bodies, not-for-profit organisations and service partners to strengthen governance, design effective programs, build evaluation systems and support reform that is culturally grounded, evidence-informed and useful for decision-making.
Matika’s professional background includes remote infrastructure projects, Aboriginal governance strengthening, child and family reform, out-of-home care, service design, contract management, funding systems, community engagement, implementation planning and outcomes measurement. This experience gives her a practical understanding of how reform moves from policy into real service systems, and where it can lose connection with the communities it is meant to support.
Through Malya Consultants, Matika helps organisations listen with purpose, design with integrity, evaluate what matters and demonstrate whether work is genuinely being heard, respected and translated into meaningful outcomes. Her approach recognises Aboriginal voices, cultural knowledge, community authority and cultural metrics as valid sources of evidence, governance and decision-making.
Matika’s work is guided by a clear principle: community knowledge should shape projects from the outset, not be added at the end. Through Malya Consultants, she supports clients to move from ideas to programs, research to service design, engagement to decision-making, governance to accountability, and outputs to outcomes.
